                    System icon, select the Device Manager tab, select the 
                    plus sign next to the icon for "Sound, Video ...," and 
                    look for ES1869, ES1887, or ES1888 among the devices listed.

DESCRIPTION:  Unpacks the files needed to install the driver for the 
ESS 1869, 1887, or 1888 Audio chipset in selected Presario models 
(see PRODUCTS AFFECTED).  

Enhancement/Fixes:
  - Fixes various problems caused when upgrading to Windows 98, which 
    overwrites the Compaq ESS Audio driver, including the following:
    - Modem audio muted by the ESS Mixer
    - Loss of midi support in DOS (Example: "11th Hour")
    - Low volume while recording (fixed by turning on Mic preamp)
  - Microsoft DirectX certification

HOW TO USE:

1. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive and change 
to that directory.  The file that is downloaded is a self-extracting
executable with a filename based on the SoftPaq Number above.

2. From that drive and directory, execute the downloaded file 
and follow the on-screen instructions to unpack the files.
The number of files to be created and total file size is displayed.
You will be given the chance to specify the target directory for 
the files, or default to the download directory.

3. After the files have been created, you may delete the  
self-extracting file downloaded in step 1.

4. To install, run SETUP.EXE from the download directory.

5. After a successful installation is completed, you may delete the files
created in step 2 if you wish.
