SOFTPAQ NUMBER: SP4792

FILE NAME: N/A
TITLE: Upgrade Compaq Insight Management Agents for Windows NT
VERSION: 3.40C
LANGUAGE: English

CATEGORY: Systems/Software Solutions

PRODUCTS AFFECTED: Compaq servers running Compaq Insight Management
Agents Version 3.40

OPERATING SYSTEM: Microsoft Windows NT Version 3.51 and 4.0

EFFECTIVE DATE: 8 October 1997

ELECTRONIC DISTRIBUTION ALLOWED: Yes

SOFTPAQ UTILITY VERSION: 2.x

SUPERSEDES: SP3979

PREREQUISITE: A licensed copy of Version 3.40 of Compaq Insight Management
Agents for Windows NT is required for each server to be upgraded.

DESCRIPTION: Unpacks files needed to upgrade Compaq Insight Management Agents
for Windows NT from Version 3.40 to Version 3.40C.
This upgrade fixes the following problems:

- A memory leak causes the system to eventually run out of virtual memory.

- Tape backups may not be able to complete if the SCSI Insight Agent is enabled.

- The 3.40 Insight Agents crash if a large number of muliple LUN SCSI devices
are attached to a single SCSI bus.

- The 3.40 Insight Agents may incorrectly identify a Compaq 15/30-Gigabyte
DLT Tape Drive as a Compaq 10/20-Gigabyte DLT Tape Drive.

- The 3.40 Insight Agents may generate incorrect storage system traps when
a dual bus SCSI controller is present.

HOW TO USE:

1. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive and change
to that directory. The file that is downloaded is a self-extracting
executable with a filename based on the SoftPaq Number above.

2. From that drive and directory, execute the downloaded file
and follow the on-screen instructions to unpack the files.
The number of files to be created and total file size is displayed.
You will be given the chance to specify the target directory for
the files, or default to the download directory.

3. After the files have been created, you may delete the
self-extracting file downloaded in step 1.

4. Copy the Insight Management Agents from the Version 3.40 CD-ROM to a local
directory on the server. The Insight Agents will be installed from this setup
directory after it is updated. The following example uses the directory
C:\NTAGENTS.340 and assumes that D: is the CD-ROM drive:

        XCOPY /S /E /V D:\AGENTS\WIN-NT\ENG C:\NTAGENTS.340\

NOTE: If you have previously used the Insight Management Agents Version 3.40 CD-ROM
to create diskettes containing the Version 3.40 Insight Agents for Windows NT,
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO APPLY THE UPGRADE IN THIS SOFTPAQ DIRECTLY TO THOSE DISKETTES.
You can use those diskettes instead of the CD-ROM to copy the agents to the setup
directory, as in this example:

        XCOPY /S /E /V A:\ C:\NTAGENTS.340\

5. From the download target directory in step 2, run the PATCH utility to upgrade
the Insight Agents in the setup directory from Version 3.40 to Version 3.40C.
(The patch will only work with the 3.40 version of the Insight Agents.)

        PATCH C:\NTAGENTS.340

6. From the setup directory (C:\NTAGENTS.340 in this example), run SETUP.CMD
to upgrade the Insight Agents on the server to Version 3.40C. Follow the
instructions for a normal installation of the Insight Agents.
