        and Upgrade Firmware
VERSION: 1.2
LANGUAGE: English

CATEGORY: Desktops/Software Solutions

PRODUCTS AFFECTED: Compaq Deskpro 2000, 4000, and 6000 Series

OPERATING SYSTEM: N/A

SYSTEM CONFIGURATION: Quantum Sirocco 2.5-GB IDE Hard Drive

EFFECTIVE DATE: 21 August 1997

ELECTRONIC DISTRIBUTION ALLOWED: Yes

SOFTPAQ UTILITY VERSION: 2.x

SUPERSEDES: SP2893

DESCRIPTION: Creates a bootable diskette that determines whether
a 2.5-GB Sirocco hard drive is installed in a Deskpro 2000, 4000, or
6000 Series computer. Some of these hard drives made before
June 25, 1996 may have a stiction problem. A fix was implemented
after June 25, 1996 to correct the error. The utility on the
diskette displays the manufacturers date code for the drive.
If a user is having problems with the hard drive, and the utility
shows that it is a Sirocco drive made before June 25, 1996, the
user should arrange for their Compaq Service Provider to replace
the drive.
This utility also upgrades the 2.5-GB Sirocco hard drive firmware to
correct a false post error message (1720 Intellisafe Failure).

HOW TO USE:

1. Obtain a formatted 1.44-MB diskette.

2. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive and change
to that directory. The file that is downloaded is an executable with
a filename based on the SoftPaq Number above.

3. From that drive and directory, execute the downloaded file and follow
the on-screen instructions. You will be prompted to insert the
formatted diskette in a drive to create the diskette.

4. After the diskette has been created, you may delete the SoftPaq file
   downloaded in step 2.

5. Insert the created disk in the Deskpro computer to be tested. Power
on the computer with the diskette in drive A. The computer boots from
the diskette, and the utility searches for a Sirocco drive.
If found, it looks for the manufacturing date code on the drive and
displays the results on the screen.

6. After the results are displayed the hard drive firmware is upgraded
if it is a 2.5-GB Sirocco hard drive.
