DESCRIPTION:

The Intel SpeedStep Technology Applet is a Windows program that allows an enabled
CPU to operate in multiple performance states: Battery Optimized (low frequency)
and Maximum Performance (high frequency).

This applet will place an icon on the system tray to provide a visual indication of
the CPU state. It will also allow the user to set/adjust the CPU state to their
preference.

ENHANCEMENTS/FIXES:

 - Adds logo for Windows 2000, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE and Windows ME.
   Signature files are also provided.

 - Adds an external interface that returns the SMI interface revision
mode under which the Applet is operating.

 - Adds the ability to configure the SystemPrefs registry value to prevent
the "(Recommended)" string from appearing after any of the choices in the
   user interface drop-down selection boxes.

 - Adds enhanced error handling to the Transition Control SMI command when
processing a system suspend message. The change forces the Applet to
   re-acquire transition ownership upon resume.

 - Adds code to request transition ownership when processing the system
critical resume message. When a critical hibernate occurs, the Applet
does not receive any system level notification. The change forces
the Applet to re-acquire transition ownership upon resume from a critical
   hibernate.

 - Fixes a user interface issue. If the user selected "Maximum Battery" for
their "Running on batteries" preference and closed the user interface dialog,
the Applet would set the preference to "Battery Optimized Mode" when the user
reopened the user interface dialog box.

 - Fixes issue where, when running on AC, if the user could open the tray icon's
pop-up menu and removed AC before making a menu selection, the user could still
select "Automatic" mode. The change disallows selection of this non-supported
   mode.

 - Adds static transition support for Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0. Static
transition support means that AC insertion/removal events trigger transitions
and Maximum Performance and Battery Optimized Performance are the only supported
modes on Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0. Due to the system requirements for
Automatic and Maximum Battery modes, these modes are not supported on Windows 95 or
Windows NT 4.0. Under Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0, the IST Applet v2.1 will look
and feel just like the IST Applet v1.3 and earlier versions.

 - Modifies InstallShield installer so that it does not cause an error if a handle is
open to the prpcui.dll. The installer program sets up the wininit.ini to replace
the locked file on the next reboot.

HOW TO USE:

1. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive. The file downloaded is a
self-extracting executable with a filename based on the SoftPaq Number above.

2. Double-click to execute the Softpaq file.

3. Press the spacebar to continue with the setup.

NOTE: Once you confirm the directory where the files will be extracted to, SETUP.EXE should run
automatically to install the deliverable. If it is not automatic, then double-click SETUP.EXE.

   Follow the on-screen instructions.

4. After the installation is completed, you may delete the directory created in step 2 if you wish.
