Softpaq Solution: SP1470
File Name: PP_FIX.EXE
Title: Fix Laptop Parallel Port I/O Timing
Version: N/A

CATEGORY: Software Solution / Laptop

EFFECTIVE DATE: 01 Feb 1996

PRODUCTS AFFECTED: Compaq Elite Family and Contura 400 Family

OPERATING SYSTEM: All

SYSTEM CONFIGURATION: Compaq Elite Family or Contura 400 Family

SUPERSEDES: N/A

DESCRIPTION: The PP_FIX.EXE utility inserts additional wait states when performing parallel port I/O. This corrects problems seen with some external devices that use the parallel port. It also corrects some parallel port data transfer failures. Systems supported are the Elite Family and the Contura 400 Family only.

Execute from a DOS prompt with the following parameter options:
        PP_FIX S Slow I/O speed
PP_FIX F Set I/O speed back to fast

HOW TO USE:

1. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive and change to that directory. The file that is downloaded is SP1470.EXE.

2. From that drive and directory, execute the SoftPaq file:
SP1470 [ENTER]
The following files should be created:
PP_FIX.EXE
PP_FIX.DOC

3. After the files are created, you may delete the downloaded file SP1470.EXE if you wish.

4. Go to a DOS prompt. If the Operating System on the fixed disk is not DOS or Windows 95, boot from a DOS diskette (see step 6).

5. Execute PP_FIX.EXE with the S parameter to slow the I/O speed:
      PP_FIX S
Execute PP_FIX.EXE with the F parameter from a DOS prompt at any time to restore the original "Fast" I/O speed:
      PP_FIX F

6. Retry the parallel port operation that was failing. If the Operating System on the fixed disk was not DOS or Windows 95, you must first warm boot (Ctrl/Alt/Del) to the fixed disk and then retry the parallel port operation that was failing.
